If You Feel Invisible as a Creator, You’re Not Alone

Hey Creator,

One of the hardest things to deal with is working up the courage to be on camera. The only thing that feels harder, is usually pushing publish.

Those who aren’t content creators themselves can’t appreciate this and will dismiss content creation as the “easiest job in the world” or not has hard as a regular job. Everything is hard in its own way and it’s okay to acknowledge that.

I’ll be honest, if I made the same amount of money from content creation as one of my first jobs, working in a Borders Book store, I would say that working in the bookstore was probably easier by a million miles.

I just happen to enjoy content creation more.

But content creation is infinitely harder than most jobs I have ever held, and that includes the ones where I had to unpack a truckload of freight, stand on my feet for 8 hours, and do customer service.

You see what nobody tells you is that white collar work in general, is harder in a much different way than retail or even manual labor. Yes, white collar work is less physically demanding, but it’s harder which is why it’s the harder job to get in the first place. It’s also why its happens to usually pay more, and this is usually understood by most people.

The reason that content creation doesn’t get the same respect or consideration is because it happens to feel more accessible and because the largest names in content creation happen to always be young.

“If a kid can do it from their bedroom, it’s not hard work, it’s luck”, is usually the rationalization that people have. Which means they have never done it.

Being on camera is TERRIFYING since most people have a deep fear of embarrassment and public speaking.

There are very few things that will make you feel as foolish and incompetent as learning video editing software or graphic design software. I have seen grown men and women almost breakdown into tears when having their editing or thumbnail designs critiqued.

Content creation is a very humbling experience that the average person has no way to relate to and can’t understand the confidence and courage required to attempt it, let alone keep doing it for months or years.

Building your confidence is a matter of showing up and being consistent and having clarity in your mission and vision. But you also need to be supported by people who genuinely understand your challenges.
